Columbia, South Carolina can be sizzling, but it’s okay. Tourism and meeting officials say that they’re “cool” with the city’s “hot” reputation. “We’re famous for it, going all the way back to the hot time when the city was burned during the Civil War,” said S. Scott Powers, executive director of the Columbia Regional Sports Council that, along with the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), is part of the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism.

“We have fun with our reputation for heat, and we want everyone to know that we’re the hot, new meeting place. But we’re also we’re a hip, cool city, and that sometimes surprises people who have never been here before.”
