The newly-constructed, state-of-the-art Wilmington Convention Center opened for business in January and quickly garnered steady business and positive reviews, according to John Sneed, convention sales manager for Wilmington/Cape Fear Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). He further noted that groups that have met in the facility have reported higher than usual—and even record—registration/attendance for their events. Situated along the Cape Fear River, offering water views, the center is now the largest of its kind in the state at more than 107,000 square feet. It features an adjacent 580-space parking deck, multiple meeting rooms and a 30,000-square-foot exhibit hall. The center sports a maritime decor with large-scale photos of Wilmington’s maritime history covering its walls. It is also a green building, Nelson said, noting that it features solar panels and water-saving devices. The $59 million project was completed $4 million under budget, according to official records.
